July 19, 2015: Mekong Delta

If you are a product of our generation, how many times do you remembering the Mekong Delta being mentioned on the evening news? A lot of war happened around there. Currently, 18,000,000 of Vietnam’s 90,000,000 population live on the Mekong. They farm along the banks, they live at the river’s edge, they fish its waters… They drink and bathe straight from the Mekong. It doesn’t offer attractive scenery, but one can glimpse the region’s way of life. Vietnamese are still selling their crops on wooden boats in floating markets in the early morning hours. Of course now with a prolific tourist trade, boats are also peddling brewed coffee and hot rice noodles for breakfast..all with water straight out of the Mekong!
It happens you can reach Cambodia by boat on the Mekong. 2 choices are offered, with a difference of $8 and 2 hours: the fast boat or the slow boat. We took the fast boat and went through customs at a stop along the river route.
We now entered our 11th country of the ZWT.
